Do you know Janell Geason?

Well you should! She is an amazing AVEDA makeup artist. I took her Editorial makeup class in Orlando, Florida a few years ago and I was very impressed not only by her talent but also by her calm demeanor.
Janell is the reason I was able to work NYC fashion week for the Spring 2010 Sara Shepard collection…

Janell’s work is inspiring, motivating, and brilliant!

Here are a few things I learned from this talented artist…

Use eyeliner as shadow: Saturate the liner close to your lash line, as you move up the lid lighten your application. Using a smudger brush blur your liner and create your desired shape. *This is a great base for any shadow.

SEE the shape of your makeup: This doesn’t mean draw shapes on your face! However, you do want to see strong color with blurred edges to accent features or to simply balance them…

Notice how gentle her application is…

Becoming an editorial stylist

The road to becoming an editorial stylist is not an easy one. For the past 6 years I have been working my ass off. I’ve put in many hours in the salon and have styled for as many photo shoots, fashion shows, and events for free as I physically can. I can assure you this is not a position that people just hand out. I have been very lucky in my career to have mentored with Patrick McIvor ( a freakishly talented colorist & artistic director for Matrix) and Jayson Morgan (one of Redken’s best educators). They provided me with a great start to my never-ending story.

Working with such inspiring people taught me how to make things happen for myself. It’s hard to remember all the things you learn but the one I will never forget is ALWAYS be a yes or a no. That simple statement helped me get where I am today. I am never afraid to ask an extremely successful person anything and if they say no whatever, at least I know for sure that it’s not going to happen.

A few things that being a yes got me…

Perfect Holiday Season Lip

Looking for a great bold lip color? I adore AVEDA’s black current. It is great for the holiday season! This color has the perfect balance of red and plum.

I recommend keeping the rest of your look neutral. Use a color like harvest from Glominerals..

To keep the lip color from bleeding I use Glominerals camouflage with a concealer brush.
